Where and what to eat in Turkey: tips for tourists and migrants

Some travellers prefer an all-inclusive hotel holiday. But others consider flats in Alanya, Konakli, Oba, Avsalar and other regions to live in Turkey, experiencing its real life. In that case, it’s not just a question of deciding on a roof over your head that’s important. Equally important is how and what to eat when you are not staying in an All Inclusive hotel.

There are tourists who have the perception that self-catering is much more expensive. But experienced travellers and foreigners who have moved to the South Republic. for permanent residence share their positive experiences.

Cafes, restaurants, eateries and street food

Since Turkey is a tourist destination, it is impossible to go hungry. The financial possibilities of the guest are another matter. In a slightly developed city one can find cafés, restaurants and eateries. It is quite common in larger towns and cities to sell a variety of local and international specialities in the streets.

The prices of cafés and restaurants, however, vary enormously. Experienced tourists share that one should not rush to beach establishments or those that position themselves as tourists. You can be almost one hundred percent sure that the prices there will be the highest. Instead it is better to look at the small and modest, at first sight, cafes, which can be found quite often. A full meal there will cost in the region of $5.

A restaurant is not the same as a restaurant. If you can, you can find a mid-range establishment to enjoy a high level of service and appetising food. But then you should not count on a cheque of less than $12 – $15 per person.

From budget options it is worth remembering fast food places. The brightest example – Mc Donald’s, where a simple hamburger will cost about a dollar. But if visitors rent flats with a sea view in Turkey in order to enjoy the local flavor, it is enough to walk around the streets. There is plenty of inexpensive but tasty and offbeat food to be found, which at the very least is worth a simple taste.

There are also seafood people on the streets of Turkish cities. For example, you can get a hearty and tasty snack of stuffed mussels. The price per serving is usually up to three liras. Another interesting, but perhaps unconventional, option is the ekmek balik. It is essentially fish on bread. You can usually have tuna, mackerel or bonito, to which you can add some lettuce. If you want to try ke kebab, you must wash it down with a local drink, shalgam. It is a kind of brine that is served cold with pickles.

Buying food for the kitchen

There are travellers who prefer to cook for themselves while in another country. For them, the question of how much groceries cost in the South Republic and where to buy them is relevant. This is also an important consideration for migrants who have recently relocated by buying property in Konakli or elsewhere. After all, they, too, have to get used to organizing both tasty and economical meals.

Food is very tasty in Turkey and nature is quite generous to this country. Therefore, it is possible to organize a meal here, enjoying a varied diet. Another thing is that the prices in different outlets vary considerably. In the cities, there are regular grocery shops practically at every turn. Here, the range is relatively small, but there is a convenient home delivery service. The prices here, on the other hand, are usually a little higher.

Locals prefer to go to supermarkets where you can buy almost anything. There are frequent promotions, so you can also save money by knowing where and when there are sales and discounts. Of course, supermarkets have a high level of service. They carry a variety of brands, including high-end brands. But it all depends on the chain: there are supermarkets that cater to customers with a fat wallet. Budget-friendly outlets can also be found.

The Turkish market is another place where a lot of people go shopping. Tourists consider it a must to come here as a sightseeing trip. But do not forget that it is also a place where you can make bargains. If that is the case, you should make a trek around the entire market before you buy the food. Because the range of prices can be quite large. You shouldn’t forget about the tradition of bargaining.
